Traveling exhibit: Forgotten Gateway: Coming to America Through Galveston Island

As a major gateway for immigration, Galveston Island was the port of entry for hundreds of thousands of people coming to America from 1845 to 1924. Forgotten Gateway considers the importance of place in the immigrant experience and explores universal themes of immigration including leaving home, encountering danger, confronting discrimination, and navigating bureaucracy.

is a Senior Lecturer in the Honors College at the University of Houston, where he also directs Creative Work: A Pre-Professional Program. He is the author of the novels A Sort of Homecoming and Send in the Devils. His short fiction has appeared in Critical Quarterly, The Dublin Review, and been broadcast on BBC Radio.

After the fall of communist Russia and fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989, Czechs and Slovaks took to the streets to demand political reforms. The Velvet Revolution was born.
